Protecting Your Items from Florida Humidity
Residents of West Palm, Florida are certainly no strangers to high humidity. However, few and far between actually take into consideration the damage that those highly humid days can take on their personal (often expensive) items during a move. This article, Protecting Your Items from Florida Humidity, is aimed to give a little advice on how you can protect your valuable items during your next move.
Let’s briefly talk about some of the damage that be inflicted in just a short amount of time due to humidity. First, and foremost, it can be detrimental to electronic devices. By wearing down the electric circuits, it in turns shortens the overall lifespan of your computer, television, and DVD/Blu-Ray players. High humidity also is a breeding ground for mold and mildew, thus anything made of organic substances, such as paper, fur, and other textiles (even) clothing, and if left untreated the mold and mildew can spread rapidly destroying your items entirely. And the final factor is that of condensation, when moving particular items from your nice air conditioned home, to a say, a hot moving van, condensation water droplets can quickly accumulate and create nasty damage to leather and electronic goods.
Now that you know a little about some of the damage that can occur during your move in high-humid temperatures, here are some tips on how you can avoid the damage that is lurking.
- Check the Weather: The local weather can be a tremendous lifesaver when planning your move, keep a careful watch, and if possible choose your move date that falls during a low-humidity week. *Note, mold and mildew can grow at 55 RH, keep watch for your local weather to give you this number, anything above 55 RH is not advisable for a move.
- Embrace Air: One of the best precautions you can take is to make sure that all of your belongings are packed properly, but when loaded on the truck be sure that there is as much air flow as safely possible between your items. Use felt pads or spacers when packing artwork to prevent glass from sticking. And never use plastic bags (which locks in moisture) to seal anything away.
- Climate Control: Do some research and make sure that the truck or moving company you will be using for your move is climate controlled. That also includes if your items are heading into storage. These climate controlled options may cost a little more, however the cost to replace your belongings will cost far more! Be sure to confirm with your moving company what climate control measures they take, as well as what temperatures and humidity levels they can ensure to keep your items held at.
