What to Know Before Your Move
Many people who have never moved with a professional moving company, begin their searches and very quickly find themselves so overwhelmed that they all too often forget what their priorities are (or were) in terms of the company they wish to handle their personal belongings. If you are planning to move with a professional moving company, before you even start your search, read this this article on some things to consider before you make your selection. 1. Always get an in-home estimate from the company you select, never hire a moving company based on a nothing more than a ballpark quote. Request your estimate to be binding, as by-law the moving company can then not charge you over 10% of that initial estimate.
2. When selecting your dates, leave some room for flexibility on both ends. Particularly during peak moving season, and don’t get discouraged if the first company you contact can’t accommodate (precisely) your move or delivery dates, call around, more than likely they won’t be the only company that books quickly.
3. Be sure that you are getting enough movers for your move. Ask how many crew members will be on site, especially if you are getting packing services. If only a driver shows up with no crew, you’re in for a very long and tedious moving day.
4. Look for a moving company that has a good reputation. Do some research with Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List for a good place to start, be sure to call around and speak with multiple agencies, and not just the first one that you speak with.
5. If you find yourself in a “hostage loading” scenario, which is your moving company unlawfully holding your household items and refusing to unload them until they receive full payment, the first step you should take is to call law enforcement. While this is a civil case and not a criminal case, you can still put some pressure on the rogue moving company by having the police there to assist you. Don’t forget to call the American Moving and Storage Association to file a report as well, they can assist you in negotiations between you and the moving company, and can provide you with information to assist you further in the release of your items.
