Although relocation is commonly believed to be stressful, expensive and complicated, if you follow these tips for decluttering before moving, you will learn otherwise. De-cluttering is an important part of the relocation process. Since you will be paying for everything you relocate, it makes a lot of sense to simply focus on taking only what you need at your new house and to get rid of everything else.
- Take time to declutter
One of the best tips for decluttering before moving, according to movers, is waiting until the last possible moment to start decluttering is extremely unhelpful. It is only going to make the moving process more complicated and unnecessarily time-consuming. Instead, start early to tackle each part of your house. This way, you can work slowly to go through your belongings and to only keep what you absolutely need.
- Use up any extra supplies
If you had previously stocked up on packed food, toilet paper, cleaning products or other items, then be sure to use them up as much as you can so that you won’t have to carry them with you to the new house. If you run out, it is best to simply pick up a smaller sized packet to last you until relocation.
- Put together the ‘open first’ box
While not necessarily de-cluttering, this is an important step to make sure that you are well-organized on moving day. You may find yourself saving things you don’t need to take just because you think they might come in handy right after the relocation. In reality, having a ‘first open’ box will make sure that you have one less thing to worry about when you declutter your house.
- Leave the items with sentimental value for last
Aside from things that simply fall into the categories ‘needed’ or ‘not needed’, there are some items that are harder to let go. Items with sentimental value may not be the easiest to part with. Therefore, it is best to leave them to one side and come back to them after everything else has been sorted.
- Use the three box approach
Get three boxes and label them as ‘throw’, ‘keep’ and ‘sell/donate’. This is the easiest way to de-clutter your house. This way, all you have to do is to go through your closets or drawers, to pick up an item and to drop it into the right box.
