Choosing the Right Mover

When it comes to the stress of moving, the last thing you want to have to worry about is if you have choosing the right mover or not. So many people who are faced with the decision to move themselves or choose a moving company to do so for them, find themselves more often than not using the bottom-line price as their determining factor, and in the moving industry that can be the worst decision possible.

More and more in the news we are hearing about “rogue” moving companies, who offer the lowest rates, and fastest service; and many clients are jumping on board without getting all the necessary information. In turn, these customers are finding themselves faced with damaged goods, hidden fees, their household goods being held until they are able to pay the entire amount of their move, of which ends up costing the customer thousands of dollars more than the previously agreed upon rate…

So, how can you ensure that you are working with a legitimate moving company? Here are some tips on what you can look for, when choosing the right mover for your specific needs:

  • Get Estimates: One of the most commonly overlooked aspect regarding choosing a mover is actually having a visual survey conducted, and seeing an actual estimate from your prospective moving company. Many people simply call several companies, ask for their rates and go with the lowest. You’re household goods should be protected in the best way possible, keep in mind that the best moving company, may not always be the cheapest.
  • Do Your Homework: Legitimate companies are required to keep and maintain proper licenses and DOT numbers which are issued by FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and are bound to abide by specific rules and regulations. If a moving company you are interviewing does not have all of the proper licensing in place, do not move with them!
  • Read Up: Be sure to ask for a copy of “Your Rights and Responsibility’s When You Move”, if you are not given one when you receive your estimate. This is a booklet which gives you all the information you need when planning your move… and is also required (by law) for your prospective mover to give you. If you are not given one either initially or by request, this should be an instant red flag.
  • Prioritize: Before you even start interviewing moving companies in WPB, be sure to lay out all of your priorities for your move. Set a budget for yourself (with some leeway), and weigh out all your options and what is important for your move. Find a company that doesn’t meet your standards? Move on to the next one!

The right moving company is out there for you, sometimes it just takes some time and searching!
