Do You Have a Moving Checklist?

Do You Have a Moving Checklist?

Do You Have a Moving Checklist? We have created a checklist for you to review two months prior to your next move, to make your next relocation as stress-free as possible!

Two Months

  • Begin sorting your items. Try and downsize as much as possible.
  • Start looking into moving companies. Never rely on “ballpark” figures, always request a visual survey, and make sure that the estimate you receive has a USDOT (U.S. Dept. of Transportation) number on it.
  • Create a moving binder or notebook, to keep any and all information you receive from your moving company in order, as well as receipts.
  • If you have children, now is a good time to get their school records in order if they will be transferring schools.

Six Weeks

  • Purchase your supplies. Many moving companies offer them at discounted pricing if you are moving with them. You can also purchase them at your local Wal-Mart or home store.
  • Start using up perishable or frozen foods, as well as cleaning supplies in your home.

One Month

  • Book your moving company and set your dates! Finalize costs, dates, building access, any additional valuation for high-value items and any other additional details.
  • Start packing! Always start with the items that you don’t use too often. Be sure to always label your boxes as well. And separate your valuables (jewelry and files) to move with you in a safe box.
  • Get your change of address forms and notify any important parties; such as your bank, human resource department, etc. And be sure to forward your medical records, if necessary.

Two Weeks

  • Arrange with your office to take your moving day off.
  • Take your car to a local shop to get a tune up, especially if you will be moving to or from Florida.
  • If you are changing banks, remember to clear out your safe deposit box.

One Week

  • Refill any necessary prescriptions to last the next couple of weeks.

Three Days

  • Pack you suitcases, enough clothing to last you a few days.
  • Empty, clean out and defrost your refrigerator and freezer.
  • Reconfirm your dates (if they haven’t first) with your moving company. Make sure they have accurate directions to your new home, and that all details are finalized. Be sure they have your contact information including cell phone, and a back up number as well.
  • Plan ahead for payment on delivery day. You’ll have enough things to deal with, payment shouldn’t be one!

Moving Day

  • Verify that the truck that arrives, is the company you hired! The USDOT number should match the number listed on your estimate.
  • Take an inventory and supervise your items being moved. Before the movers leave, review and sign the Bill of Lading and ask for a copy.

Moving doesn’t have to be as stressful as many fear it to be! And with careful planning and preparation, you can have a seamless move too!
