How to Declutter Before A Move

When it comes to the stress of packing yourself for a long distance move, or even a simple move across town, the last thing you want to fret about it packing an item that you can easily toss or donate. This brief article on How to Declutter Before A Move is aimed to provide you with a little insight on how to declutter prior to your upcoming move, to save you some much needed space and packing material as well as the stress of bringing a potentially unwanted item into your new home!

  • If you still have boxes that remain unpacked from your last move, chances are the items that are in them are things you can certainly live without. Be sure to open them up and skim through the contents to make double-sure you aren’t tossing or donating an item that you will need in the future (bills, important documents, a momento, etc.), the rest you can leave behind!

  • Open up your closets! This is a sacred space for hoarders. If you have clothes or shoes that simply don’t fit, or are no longer your unique style, don’t wait for the fashion trend to circle back around, it’s time to let them go.

  • Gifts that you have never used (or opened) can also go, and this is a great way to make some extra cash for your move! If someone gave you a blender for your engagement party and you can’t see yourself parting ways with your trusty college model, put it on Craigslist or have a yard-sale, you never know who may be looking for what you no longer need.

  • Go through your food items, if you have any foods that are past their expiration date, toss them. If you find yourself in crunch-time during your move and don’t see yourself eating (or packing) some of the canned goods in your cabinets, donate them to your local food bank!

  • Don’t forget to take a peek in your medicine cabinet as well and check the expiration dates on your medications and toiletries as well. There’s no point in taking up extra space with a bottle of expired Pepto-Bismol.

  • Magazines and books that you haven’t read (and probably won’t) read or have already read can all be donated to your local library for someone else to get a good use out of.

  • Paperwork is also a typical cause of unnecessary space-usage. Use the 7-year rule, if you are holding on to any paperwork that is older than 7-years (and is not needed for accounting purposes) feel free to toss, shred or burn the unneccessary documents. Or as a better option, scan the documents and save to your computer.
