Tips For Reducing Waste While Moving

Millions of Americans move each year and in the average moving household generates massive amount of waste. Not only is this a financial problem  (waste disposal charges) for the owners but it is also an environmental issue with so many items that can be recycled or reused being dumped away in the rush. That is why we created these Tips For Reducing Waste While Moving.

As we have said many times before, decluttering is a very important part of a relocation project to make sure that you only take what you absolutely need. However, the very same practice is well known to create piles and piles of trash. As many movers often suggest, starting the clutter removal early on will help you sort out your belongings and to figure out what you can give away or recycle.

Recycling and giving away are two very important ways of reducing waste. As mentioned earlier, be sure to take the time to go through all of your belongings and put things in piles for giving away and recycling. You can even put some items in a garage sale. Things such as old books, old pieces of furniture, old clothes, children’s toys and various knick-knacks can be sold off in a garage sale or donated to charity as long as they are good enough to be reused. Anything that can be recycled can be taken to a recycling center to minimize the amount of waste.

Packing will require you to purchase cardboard boxes. Instead, why not ask local businesses if they have any leftover cardboard boxes? This will not only reduce the amount of trash generated by your move but also save you a bit of money. You can also ask friends, family members and even any newly moved-in neighbors. After completing the move, you can arrange for the boxes to be given away to another person, preparing for their own relocation.

Making use of any luggage carriers, duffel bags or carry-on bags that you already have is another great way to save up on packing and to reduce the disposal load. You can easily load your clothes, linens and towels in the bags. Old newspapers work great at providing cushioning for fragile items and if you must invest for packing materials, look for biodegradable packing peanuts and bubblewrap. Of course, you can always recycle them once the move is complete.

Of course you will need to obtain crates to pack heavier items such as art, furniture and various other items including valuables. For this, you can ask your movers for reusable storage crates. These crates are sturdy, strong (perfect for protecting your belongings) and last up to 10 years before they can be recycled.
